Narrative Design

During my time as an animator, I spent almost 2 years on and off creating all the storyboards for the game. Working together with the animation supervisor and art director, my boards were the first step at visualizing all the cutscenes from the CEO’s scripts.

The game was initially outlined by lead designer Jessica Kernan and composer Jason Gallaty, but then converted into written scripts by the CEO and Art Director. The characters and plot points stayed the same for the most part, but the details and nuances of the world and characters had to be fleshed out for a greater portion of development. I helped out on story development until the last 1-2 years of production, when I switched further into game design and the implementation side.

My responsibilities on the story team:

  • Creating storyboards for every cutscene in the game

  • Workshopping the script and boards with the story team (CEO, Art Director, Animation Supervisor)

  • Developing the characters and NPCs, and how that would impact their dialogue and animation

  • Writing first drafts of NPC dialogue and cutscene VO

  • Re-working the outline of the story arcs and how it works with each NPC

  • Creating the first draft list of Objectives for the player

  • Integrating and bugfixing narrative moments within the game (NPC, cameras, cutscenes)
